Open Road Ahead

The primary mission of A Mile in Their Shoes is to provide transportation and in North Idaho greater distances mean most people need a car. Here's how the program works.

Donor Cars

How it Works

As part of the application process, we'll discuss your vehicle needs. The more specifics you can provide, the better. Some families need a subcompact. Others need a minivan. We want to find a car that fits what you actually need rather than simply picking the first thing that comes along. Most vehicles are acquired from auctions, so we cannot make guarantees about specific makes, models, years, colors, and so on.

Once we have everything figured out the hard part begins: Waiting. We'll begin looking for a vehicle that meets your needs and requests. Sometimes we find one right away. Sometimes it may take a few months. But the right car comes along eventually and when it does we'll snag it and let you know we've found a vehicle for you. A few steps remain before hand off, however. In addition to securing the vehicle we will:

Wrenches
  • Have a mechanic look the it over and complete any critical repairs. We cannot guarantee everything will be 100%; usually cosmetic fixes are not done, for example. We will diagnose all warning lights on the dash address any that affect performance or safety.

  • Ensure all known mechanical issues are repaired.

  • If the tires are not in good shape, we'll replace them.

  • Change the oil, air filter, wiper blades (if needed), and top up all fluids.

  • Replace any burned out headlights, tail lights, turn signals, etc.

  • Wash and detail the car as needed.

What Happens Next?

Usually it takes about 3-4 weeks for the title to arrive from the State of Idaho. Once that happens we'll top off the gas tank, bring your car to you, and sign it over. You will also receive a gift affidavit from us that must be signed and taken to the DMV when registered or they won't let you complete the registration process. That's it!

What Am I Responsible For?

Once the car is signed over to you, you'll need to insure it as we legally cannot do so on your behalf. You become responsible for registration renewal, and will need to take the transferred title to the DMV. Once you have registered, you may send a copy of your receipt from the DMV to us and we'll reimburse you for the first year cost but as with insurance we cannot legally take responsibility for registration/licensing beyond that point.

Owner Education/Assistance

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes believes in empowering the owners of donor vehicles. If you reach the 5,000 mile mark and want to save money by completing scheduled maintenance yourself, but aren't comfortable changing your oil and filters, you can bring your car by and we'll help guide you through the process. We'll do the same for any other routine maintenance process your first time out. Use the contact us form to reach out an we'll be happy to set up a time.

Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
